If you’ve ever felt stiff, sore, or like you just aren’t moving quite right, you may have heard of chiropractic adjustments as a potential solution. But what actually happens during an adjustment and what are they for?
Let’s break it down in a way that’s easy to understand.
So, What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is a hands-on technique that’s used to help improve movement in a joint—most commonly in the spine. It’s often used when a joint becomes stiff, restricted, or painful, either from an injury or from long-term postural habits.
The aim is to:
• Improve how the joint moves
• Reduce discomfort or tightness
• Encourage better awareness and control of your body’s movement
Does It Really “Put Bones Back in Place”?
Not exactly and this is a common misunderstanding.
In the early days of chiropractic care, it was thought that an adjustment moved a bone back into place. That’s partly because the technique can create a “click” or “pop” sound, and people often feel a sudden release of pressure or relief afterwards.
But modern research shows something different, there’s no actual shift in bone position. Instead, the sound you hear is simply a gas bubble being released inside the joint—similar to cracking your knuckles.
The real benefit of the adjustment is that it helps stimulate your nervous system and improve how the joint feels and functions.
What’s Actually Happening in the Body?
Let’s look at two key problems adjustments can help with:
1. Abnormal Sensation (Pain or Discomfort)
When a joint is injured—like from a sprain or strain—it can become inflamed and sensitive. Your brain starts getting lots of pain signals from that area.
An adjustment helps by stimulating different nerve receptors (called proprioceptors) that give your brain information about joint position and movement. These signals dampen the pain signals, helping you feel more comfortable and move more freely.
2. Abnormal Movement (Stiffness or Weakness)
Sometimes, joints become stiff simply because they haven’t moved properly for a while. This often happens with poor posture or from sitting too much.
When a joint isn’t being used fully, the muscles around it can weaken or switch off. An adjustment sends a strong burst of sensory information to the area, “waking up” the joint and helping your brain reconnect with that movement.
Could a Chiropractic Adjustment Help You?
Chiropractic adjustments aren’t a cure-all, but in the right situations, it can make a big difference.
You might benefit from an adjustment if:
• You’ve had a recent injury (like a sprained joint) and want to manage the pain more effectively during rehab
• You’re dealing with ongoing stiffness or tension, especially in your back, neck, or shoulders
• You’ve been struggling with long-term postural issues that limit how well your body moves
Importantly, adjustments work best when combined with rehabilitation exercises to build strength, improve posture, and help prevent the issue from returning.
At Peak Health Canberra, our Chiropractors create personalised care plans that include hands-on chiropractic treatment alongside guided rehabilitation. Our goal is to help you move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing what you love.
If you’re not sure whether an adjustment is right for you, book in for an assessment with one of our experienced Chiropractors. We’ll help you understand what’s going on in your body and whether chiropractic care could be part of your recovery journey.
